Hi Nina! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.
Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?
I always start my day early as I teach at 6 AM every weekday. I set my alarm at 4:45 AM to meditate and then I quickly get dressed, moisturise and get to where I need to be. Having a good skincare routine is really important to me and sets me up for the day. I moisture with RosehipPLUS Organic Hydrating Day Cream which instantly leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated. I normally teach until lunchtime and rush home to be with my baby boy Hunter. Hunter normally keeps me on my toes all afternoon! When my fiancé comes home from work, I’ll normally do some exercise and then we normally cook together. We are largely plant-based now. Since this transition, we’ve become a lot more creative in the kitchen and really think about what we’re putting in our bodies. Once Hunter has gone to sleep, we work on our separate businesses answering emails etc and then try to get some downtime together if it’s not too late! I always end my day with an evening shower to wash the day away.
Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you do to overcome it?
The first few days of going back to work after I had Hunter were really exhausting and overwhelming at times. I was learning how to juggle everything on little sleep. By taking a few moments in the day to meditate and connect to breath enabled me to feel grounded and much less overwhelmed. I now meditate regularly, and it’s made a dramatic improvement in the way I manage all aspects of my life.
What does ‘being healthy’ mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?
Being healthy isn’t just about looking good or having a healthy glow. It’s amazing what a fake tan and makeup can hide! For me, it’s what I look like without any makeup on and taking action on any warning signs. If I’ve got dark circles maybe that means I need to rest more. If I look sluggish it may mean I need to drink more water and have a cold-pressed juice as a mid-morning drink for a while! Making sure I meditate, exercise regularly and eat well normally keeps me looking and feeling healthy even when life gets unavoidably busy.
Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?
A girlfriend and I went to a Spanish wellness retreat around 3 years ago and it was a complete bliss. We both had been left heartbroken as our long-term relationships with our partners ended. We needed to get away from it all, rest and restore. Daily yoga, nutritious meals and even a glass of wine with dinner left us feeling stronger and ready to get back to reality. I still think about that holiday even now.
Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, please tell us what does self-care mean to you?
Self-care to me is being mindful about what we put into our bodies, finding time to exercise and meditate and learning how to switch off and relax. As soon as I fell pregnant, I threw out any cosmetics that were not natural or certified organic. I’ve always been mindful about what I eat and drink but never gave much thought about what I was using as a moisturiser or shower gel. Now I won’t use anything that isn’t natural and certified organic. My favourite is RosehipPLUS Organic Cold Pressed Oil. After I’ve cleansed my face, I massage 4 drops of the oil onto my face and neck. It leaves me looking hydrated, gets rid of any dry skin and minimises any wrinkles. I even used it throughout my pregnancy as a way to minimise stretch marks on my growing belly.
Self-care is also about balance. I try to spend time with girlfriends once a week over food and wine and I’ll get to the beach and do nothing as much as I can!
