Hi Carolyn! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.

Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?

Not really. As a business owner some days are filled with clients, other days are filled with speaking or meetings and other days are filled with administration and marketing. And of course there are then other days that are a mix of all three! In between this I also juggle two children and their variety of activities.

Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you do to overcome it?

Yes, two years ago I suffered from corporate burnout. I was working part-time in a high-stress environment, while running my business part time. The company I worked for wanted more out of me, but I didn’t want to give them any more. In fact I wanted to give them less so I could concentrate on my business. It all came to a head when one day, after dropping the children off at school, I was heading to work but my body just wouldn’t let me turn left to go to work. It wanted me to turn right and go home. I broke down and headed home. I made a doctors appointment and she gave me a week off. I then made a kinesiology appointment and she helped me realise that the stress of the job was literally killing me. 6 days later I resigned from that job and I haven’t looked back.
I have thoroughly loved working in my business full time. It has been a bit of a roller coaster, but well worth it.

What does ‘being healthy’ mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?

Being healthy for me is ensuring that I am emotionally balanced. I have previously suffered from depression and burn out so I know that I am quite an emotional person. I ensure that I regularly take time out. Things like daily meditations, having a bath, seeing my kinesiologist, or having an early night every now and then, when I need it is how I manage to stay healthy. I say Healthy Mind, Healthy Life.

Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?

A few years ago I was feeling quite stressed. My family and I organised to do an 8 day cruise and it was exactly what I needed. Being on the ocean with absolutely no cell reception for two days straight and limited cell reception when we were in port was cathartic. It was so nice to switch off and not worry about social media, emails and text messages. It was all about “just being” and “just enjoying the moments” with my family.

Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, please tell us what does self-care mean to you?

Self-care means listening to your body and your inner voice. She knows exactly what you need. It’s just that we live such busy lives that quite often we don’t hear that inner voice. It’s important to stop and tune into ourselves at least once a day to see what’s going on and what we need.
