Hi Beth! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.
Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?
I guess I’m lucky because no two days really mirror one another exactly although I do similar things each day. Mornings begin with either a trip to the gym, a yoga practice at home or a walk with my dog, Thembi. Several hours are spent at the computer working on my The Karma Class kids yoga business and my JustBreatheYoga adult focussed business. At some point I leave to teach either private clients or studio yoga classes, or I’m running a workshop for teachers on how to weave Yoga, Breath and Mindfulness into their classrooms.
Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you do to overcome it?
I’d say the early years of my divorce – which sadly, was seriously toxic – took its toll physically as well as emotionally. My yoga mat, which I returned to daily, was a sacred space for me to connect to my breath, come into my body and gift myself with Yoga medicine.
What does ‘being healthy’ mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?
Being healthy to me means cultivating balance as much as I can. When you operate from a place of balance there’s an underlying calm and strength that you can return to, like an anchor. Eating well, sleeping as much as I can and nourishing myself with the things that I love – my family, friends, yoga, great food and the odd G&T!
Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?
Ironically, I run holidays for wellbeing – Yin Yang Yoga retreats that are simply delicious. I realised about 3 years ago that I had never taken myself on a retreat so I booked into a 5 day Silent Retreat which was a truly magical experience! No phones, no outside media, no spoken sound… just nature, meditation, yoga and vegan food. Priceless!
Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, please tell us what does self-care mean to you?
Sacred time with my beloved; walks along Coogee Cliffs with my doggie; hanging in my beautiful home with my daughters; daily yoga/gym; healthy food; having a holiday to look forward to!
