Hi Natasha! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.
Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?
Running my own business from home means that I have the luxury of flexibility – I fit my work commitments around my home life as much as possible. For example, I try not to book client appointments right at 9:00 am or 3:00 pm so I am able to do the school drop off and pick up for my son. A typical day for me always starts with a short guided meditation and a nice hot cup of coffee before anybody else is awake in the house. A typical day always involves housework also, such as clothes washing or preparing dinner in advance in between appointments. I start to feel disorganised, anxious and out of control if I don’t stay on top of the housework.
Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you do to overcome it?
I stayed in an absolutely soul destroying job for almost ten years – my physical, mental and emotional health went completely downhill during this time and I wound up with Adrenal fatigue. I never spoke up for myself either because my self-esteem was so low, I felt unworthy of asking for more, I was totally in victim mode and blamed everybody else for why I wasn’t happy with my life. It took the death of my sister in law to literally wake me up – we only have one very short time here on this planet and I was not living up to my potential. Once I left my old job, I had a lot of soul searching and physical healing to do (which took time), but with rest, nutrition, herbal medicine and help from wonderful support people such as my life coach, I slowly got better and my sense of self-worth grew exponentially in the process.
What does ‘being healthy’ mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?
Being healthy to me means eating well – home cooked nutritious organic meals – I feel like I am truly nourishing and nurturing myself when I eat this way and my energy levels, digestion etc improve also. When life gets busy I struggle with getting outside in the fresh air and sunshine to exercise but eating well not only for myself but my whole family is always a priority.
Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?
I went on a meditation retreat weekend which was nothing short of amazing for the mind body and soul to recharge! – the weekend was fully serviced and catered and included nature walks, massages, facials, hydrotherapy as well as multiple guided meditations – it was absolutely blissful!
Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, please tell us what does self-care mean to you?
My number one self-care priority is time – time for oneself. This is something I didn’t do in the past but I now realise it’s a non-negotiable for my health and wellbeing. Hence first thing every morning is ‘my’ time when I meditate, read my affirmations and journal etc before the rest of the household wakes up..
