Hi Tracey! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.
Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?
Most mornings I start my day at 4.30am with a 10-minute wakeup routine involving gratitude, appreciation, visualisation, stretching and breathwork. I’m at the gym by 5am and home by 6.15am, Matt and I then do our morning priming together (more breathwork and visualisation) where we set our intentions for the day and then get the 3 kids up and off to school. Blessed to work from home, I see clients or write articles and then before I know it, it’s time for after school sports, dinner and kids to bed. Usually my husband Matt and I will sit and watch a quick Netflix episode while we download our days, check emails, socials and then off to bed by 9.30pm-ish.
Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you do to overcome it?
My well-being has been challenged in so many ways over the years but probably the most profound was when I had a multiple sclerosis misdiagnosis! After 3 long months of facing rapidly declining MS symptoms, it was discovered that what I had was in fact a system completely void of iron and B12. My body was shutting down basically. This scare was exactly what I needed to wake me up to the underlying causes of many of my well-being issues and I went on a crusade to connect my mind, spirit and body for the first time in my life. I hired an expert in physical transformations and followed his strict guidance to bring my vitality up to a level I had never experienced. He taught me the impact of nutrition and muscle strength, while I did the inner work to bring my mind and heart in to alignment with my physical body. Daily meditation became habitual as did being brutally honest with myself.
What does being healthy mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?
Being healthy means feeling vital with energy to do what I need and want to do. It means being able to laugh and relax when I need and want to. Healthy to me is feeling strong and capable, having a clear and focused mind and not feeling restricted.
I have very realistic, easy to achieve rules when it comes to keeping my health a priority. I don’t think missing a day or two at the gym when life is hectic means I have failed, I keep it real, without restrictions. So, my personal goal is to have an 80/20 approach to life. If I’m 80% all over it, then it’s totally cool if the other 20% isn’t.
Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?
Not sure if you would call it a holiday, but I do send myself off to immersive experiences every year where the focus is on well-being. This year in May, I went to Cairns for a week and surrendered to Date with Destiny, a 6-day event where transformation on all levels of being is assured. It forces you to surrender and expand if you choose to go in with the intention. I find that these kinds of “holidays” is how I fill my cup and come home restored and upgraded. Next year I am off to Fiji to do a wellness retreat, with colonics and juice cleanse.
Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, tell us about yours?
Self-care for me at this stage of my life is carving out sacred time to do absolutely nothing, where there is no one needing or wanting from me. Usually, this is regular but short visits to sit at the beach and do some breathwork and meditation. I find that if I do this every other day, I top up my energy so I can keep serving and showing up. Date nights with my husband are also a priority for my self care because I crave connection and the unconditional love he holds.
