The internet is full of travel tips. Many have been repeated ad nauseum, but occasionally you can come across an insightful tip which simplifies your travels and makes you feel more secure on your next trip. Here we collect the best of the best safety tips for you to use on your next getaway.
Taxi Protocol
Not all taxi drivers are going to try and get more money from you than the trip is worth, but it has become a well-known scam around the world. To eliminate potential problems, always choose taxis with the proper identification. You can always ask your hotel to call a taxi for you. Check the cost of the taxi ride before getting into the car, or insist that they use the meter. If you can’t agree to the price, look for another taxi. Uber may also be another great option to consider!
Protect Your Data
In this digital age protecting your data is just as important as keeping a close eye on your luggage. Avoid making any unnecessary transactions and pay cash where possible. Be wary that while complimentary Wi-Fi can feel like a fantastic gift, open networks also provide an opportunity for people to access your information. If you’re connected to an open network (one which is not password protect) it is best to use a VPN program to protect your data particularly if you’re accessing banking information.
Luggage protection
You may be taking precious luggage on your travels, such as a laptop, a valuable camera or an iPhone. Ideally all your valuables can fit into one small backpack which you can keep with you while on the move (don’t put these items in checked in luggage or in a luggage hold on a bus, just in case!). When going out it is best to store these items in a hotel locker. If there’s no locker or safe for you to use invest in a portable safe, which is a slash proof bag you can store valuables in and lock to something sturdy in your room.

Don’t be an easy target
There a couple of tricks you can use to make yourself less of an easy target to opportunistic pickpockets.
The first is to always have a sense of direction. Lost and distracted travellers are far easier to spot, especially if they’re pulling out a giant map to figure out where they are. You should also make an effort to keep your belongings secure so that you know where your wallet is at all times. Having your wallet out and visible is generally a bad idea. Keeping your money in an interior jacket pocket, front pocket or secure in your bag are the best options.
It’s also great to research where you are going and prepare an appropriate wardrobe which allows you to blend in as best you can. If you want the attention of every pickpocket in Paris just show up in a tourist shirt and shorts. Forgo tourist shirts and the traditional loose fitted travel pants for clothes that make you look more like a local or an expat.
Arrange Travel Insurance
Travel insurance can feel like a pain to organise, but if something goes wrong overseas it can provide expert assistance and save you from paying thousands of dollars out of pocket. Travel insurers vary in the benefits they can offer. The primary areas of concern are medical cover, cancellation cover and cover for luggage, which make up a high proportion of all travel insurance claims. “Nine of our top ten claims this past year were for unexpected medical emergencies, the highest being over $190,000” said Mr Dean Van Es, the CEO of Fast Cover.
