Hi Adala! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.

Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?

My day is usually filled with meetings and a healthy to do list, but I do have the typical morning coffee or two, my mid-afternoon 30 – 40min ‘switch off’ power nap and an early evening training session at ZADI.

Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you do to overcome it?

I can share two times when my well-being was definitely challenged. As a new mum 13 years ago with two girls under three and I’m sure this is not unique, I was finding it hard to take the time to look after my own health and well-being. It became very unsustainable and I had to find some ‘me time’. I actually found that time at the gym where I was able to focus on getting my strength back, it boosted my mood and for that one hour I felt like my old self again.

The second time is a lot more recent. It was whilst I was setting up ZADI training from concept to reality. The numerous uncontrollable deadlines and unknowns that come with a start-up business can easily take over your life. And that is exactly how it felt, my training, healthy eating and relaxation suffered and I did lose quite a bit of weight. Of course, I could see that I needed to get back to normality as soon as possible. I made sure that I carved put time for my own health and well-being regardless of how busy I was – no excuses.

What does ‘being healthy’ mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?

Being healthy for me means having a healthy mindset. Loving who I am and what I do is a priority. If I am feeling like being compromised, I start to take the difficult necessary steps to make changes within my control. I try to apply this in both my personal and business life.

I’m learning to not let ‘busy’ run my life. I’m a lot more productive and on my A game when I’m looking after myself first. It’s not all work and mindset though, there’s a fair amount of partying and retail therapy involved. Healthy to me is also about finding balance.

Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?

I took a 3 week girls trip to Morocco and Barcelona in 2015 after a long stint in my previous business. I was feeling stagnant and tired of the daily routine and wanted to take some time away to reflect on what I wanted to do with my career and life in general. My girls were both teens at this stage which made travelling much easier, they were very independent and I could enjoy my time away knowing they were ok. It was an amazing experience, many laughs and great times in a new environment can have a huge impact your mindset, it definitely helped me to stop and reset whist coming up with what’s next!

Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, please tell us what does self-care mean to you?

My idea of self-care is not the indulgent pampering style, although I do enjoy a regular massage, manicure and pedicure like most girls. I focus more on maintaining a positive happy and healthy mindset. I celebrate my achievements big or small, this may seem minor but It’s an important part of being kind to myself and recognising how far we have come. Making time out to catch up with the amazing positive influences in my life including mentors, friends and family. Enjoying meals and some laughs together fills me with all joy and is a constant reminder of all the amazing things in my life that I am grateful for.
