Hi Alison! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.

Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?

For me, each day is very structured given I have 2 businesses. I wake up every morning around 5am; exercise, have breakfast abd I am at my desk by around 7:30 am. I have 2 teenage boys who are very self-sufficient. We are all in a routine, so the household runs smoothly 98% of the time…lol

Pretty much every minute is accounted for when it comes to my life. Sounds rigid, although it allows the ability to maximise productivity & family life. I also integrate meditation into my life as I find this also helps create space in my mind and approach everything calmly. My workdays are long, often still working in the evenings & weekends. My boys run 2 hours per day 6 times per week, so I work around this so I’m able to drive them where they need to be.

I’m a business coach, so I’m in meetings with clients for appox. 4-6 hours per day. I also have a branding & design studio, so in between business coaching, I’m speaking to clients, briefing in new jobs & proofing work. I have a fabulous team and a brilliant PA!! My slow cooker is a lifesaver, being able to cook amazing meals with 10 mins prep – yay to that!!

Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you do to overcome it?

Last year we experienced rapid growth for the design studio. As a result, we had to create systems and processes quickly. It was a crazy time where it felt like we were all at maximum capacity.
The best thing we did was to stop for a couple of days, create new systems and processes, then reconvene. It was like the weight of the world had been lifted once we sorted out a new way of working.

What does ‘being healthy’ mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?

Healthy looks different for everyone. For me, it’s feeling balanced and having a clear mind. When I feel like this, I can do anything and also feel healthy and energised.

Meditation, nutrition, sleep and having a hobby are key contributors. I particularly love stand-up paddle boarding. I have a Red Paddle Co board which is inflatable, so can easily be placed in the car. It helps with practising balance, provides the perfect environment for meditation and / or family fun, it’s a low-impact workout and a lot of fun!

Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?

I’ve been on a few retreats which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. In fact, I really feel the need to book in another retreat, although simply haven’t dedicated the time to make it happen.

Retreats really help with resetting, relaxing, gaining a new perspective and focusing time on your wellbeing & self-care.

Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, please tell us what does self-care mean to you?

If I didn’t have daily self-care in my routine, I think I would most likely have burnt out by now.

For me, it includes daily exercise & movement to help energise and also unwind. Having over 7 hours sleep per night and learning to say no are also key elements for me, along with having clear boundaries and sticking to them. This then allows me time and headspace to switch off and relax.
