Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.
Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?
Never… although the state of my day is often the same – madness getting the kids ready, drop them off to school go for a walk, and then from there on it is always different. I like that my day is always different, what is consistent is that there is always emailing, writing new sessions for the app, client sessions and so forth so that is consistent.
Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you overcome it?
My mental well-being was definitely challenged a few years ago when I was so stressed with my business, I was doing IVF and it wasn’t working, I went back to my dear friend hypnotherapy and spent almost 12 months seeing someone and just unwinding all the stress and worry that had built up within me. This is one of the reasons I decided to train as a clinical hypnotherapist as it has helped me so much on a business and personal level.
I think midway through lock-down was also a low point for me as there was uncertainty when it would end, my roots where bad… my nails my skin all a bit of a mess – all the little beauty luxuries had been taken away so that was hard, but once I started doing home facials and accepted my roots I was fine. Change can really muck with people’s heads, but once we accept it, we can move forward.
What does being healthy mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?
I love long walks, especially love park walks and walks through woods. I love having the greenery around me and discovering things along the way with my kids. Stones and rocks whatever it might be along the way.
I very much believe in creating a healthy mindset which also leads to healthy body – the mind body connection is powerful. I regularly do a mind cleanse for myself and let go of anything I am holding onto. I use visualisation morning and night to calm my mind and be clear on what is important to me. My daily routine of self-hypnosis and visualisation is now a habit for me and makes such a difference to my mindset. I find visualisation a powerful tool to really create what you want for yourself, and you can use it to change your emotional state – rather than dwelling on a negative feeling you can use visualisation to pull you out of that state and into a more positive calmer frame of mind.
When you are feeling good emotionally you are more likely to eat healthy and look after yourself. I also found drinking water has been so good for me and adding in breathing exercises through the day. I set a timer on my phone to remind myself.
Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?
No not for along time – but I was planning a trip Marrakesh for yoga and chill time with a girlfriend which I was so excited about … but then Covid happened. So that will have to wait. Now even more a priority for me and on my to do list – more wellness trips. A change of scene alone can be so good for your mentally.
Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, tell us about yours?
I love baths and I love candles. So I hot bath with candles is my ideal. I also love a relaxing massage and facial, I find it so soothing. I also love to lie in and read a book on a Sunday morning I take turns with my husband on weekends, one of us gets lie in and just chill while the other manages the kids. It feels so lovely to just lazily wake up on a Sunday, read in bed with a coffee. Bliss. So I am quite easily pleased on the self-care front. Often simple pleasures can bring so much. Alone time is also important to me – time with no distractions, just peace and quiet time.
