Hi Elise! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.
Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?
I definitely don’t have a typical day. As a mother and business owner, my schedule is always changing. But an example of a typical day when I’m teaching a meditation course is as follows:
– Wake up around 5:00 am
– Scrape my tongue (an Ayurvedic practice that helps to remove bacteria and toxins from the mouth)
– Sit back up in bed and meditate for 30 minutes
– Head to Pilates or a session with my trainer
– Brekkie with my husband and our little boy Harley
– My workday begins – emails are generally first cab off the rank!
– Teaching – either back-to-back private sessions on Day 1 of a new course or I teach in a 3-hour block. In between is generally further research, planning and admin.
– If I’m running a course, I can be teaching into the night but if not, late afternoons are always spent at the park with Harley.
– Evenings are a combination of cooking, play and bed routine for Harley, dinner with my hubby, a little Netflix and bed.
Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you do to overcome it?
Absolutely, I experienced anxiety for about 15 years and there came a time when I realised just how much the anxiety was costing me. I was playing small in my life and knew I needed to make a big change. I researched many different styles of meditation and landed on Vedic. I signed up for the comprehensive training and the rest is history – it completely changed my life in every possible way.
What does ‘being healthy’ mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?
Healthy means ensuring my physical, mental and spiritual needs are being prioritised. I think having discipline in these areas keeps me from falling into the ‘I’m too busy’ story that we so often tell ourselves. It’s really just a non-negotiable for me. I can’t show up as a good wife, mother, teacher or friend if I’m not giving back to myself.
Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?
Not a holiday per se, but I’ve done intensive spiritual work while on retreat and it was both challenging and incredibly transformative! Having said this, I truly do believe that every holiday nourishes our well-being – even if it’s not a relax/recharge type of holiday. Adventurous holidays are nourishing us in a different way and so I always look at every holiday as an opportunity to support my well-being in some way.
Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, please tell us what does self-care mean to you?
Self-care to me is anything that feeds my body, mind or spirit. For me, that’s meditation, high quality food, Pilates, reading inspiring material, time spent with family and friends and doing little indulgent things that just simply bring me joy (an at-home facial is one of my favourites).
