Hi Emily! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.

Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?

Yes. I usually wake up between 4 – 5am depending on my first client session at Ultimate Performance Los Angeles.
From there, I walk to the gym which takes around 30 minutes and start my day. Every day is different in terms of clientele and scheduling, but the principles are the same. I train clients, I train myself, I check in on my clients.

Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you overcome it?

Honestly, I’m pretty good at prioritizing looking after myself. I’m 26, single and I live in another country to my family, so most of what I do on a daily basis revolves around my work and myself. I do work a lot throughout the week, but I take care of my nutrition, manage my sleeping habits, and exercise regularly. If I don’t look after myself, it is hard to do the best job I can for my clients. So I make getting to bed on time, fitting in my training, making sure I have access to good food a priority so I can do and feel my best.

That being said, compared to some, this is easy for me – I don’t have children or major responsibilities outside my work.

What does being healthy mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?

Being healthy to me means having somewhat of a balanced lifestyle. I make my health a priority, no matter what else is going on. Obviously there are going to be times in your life where you have more time to dedicate to these things, but making sure that there is a minimum standard I adhere to every single week is key.
I use things like a meal prep service to save me time, I walk to and from work to get my steps in, and I book my training times into my schedule in advance to make sure it gets done.

Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?

I take holidays frequently. I wouldn’t say it was specifically for my wellbeing, although I do believe that taking breaks from work is essential for quality of life. I love my work, but I also love travel. Every year at Christmas I fly home to Australia to spend time with my family. And last year I also managed short holidays in Spain, Poland and Dubai. I now live in Los Angeles, and this year I plan to see New York and Chicago in May, followed by Mexico in the late summer.

Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, tell us about yours?

I wouldn’t say this is specific to females. Self-care for me is making sure that I am making time and having a consistent routine of the things that keep me feeling good and healthy. It’s also making sure that I book in trips and have something to look forward to. I love travelling and I love exploring. I am definitely happiest when I have a good balance of training/nutrition, social life, a busy work schedule and a trip to look forward to.
