Hi Jayne! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.

Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?

There is no typical day for me as I can be meeting potential customers for a coffee to discuss their travel bucket list and travel style, travelling with families down the great ocean road, showing off Victoria’s best wineries to newlyweds, taking individuals to see Australian wildlife, showing Melbourne’s nightlife or a major event like our Melbourne Cup, AFL Grand Final, Australian Open and Grand Prix, researching destinations and providing clients with quotes for customised travel plans, replying to emails, looking into new opportunities to grow the business/advertise.

Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you overcome it?

When I was a student for six years I struggled like many students do with having a balanced lifestyle.  I would either be studying like crazy or enjoying life hiking outdoors with friends and swimming at the beach neglecting my studies. It took me a long time to realise that I could do both simultaneously if I just planned my week on paper and stuck to it until the habit was formed. Living an unbalanced lifestyle meant my weight fluctuated, I was irritable and experienced mood swings and a lack of confidence.  It took practice but over time I came to the realisation I was more productive if I went for a morning walk at the start of the day and opened up my mind to try activities that would calm and clear the mind. You don’t need to dedicate 2 hours to meditation/yoga daily, you can simply schedule in a time during your day to move which will benefit your mental and physical health.  When you have a balanced lifestyle, you are motivated to get out of your comfort zone.

What does being healthy mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?

Being healthy means I can perform at my best. I make sure I always have a wide variety of fresh fruit and vegetables in the house, so I can always cook something up that is both nutritious and delicious. I always travel with a water bottle, so I can stay hydrated and not contribute to plastic bottles going to landfill and set reminder alarms to head to bed, so I can aim to get at least 7 hours sleep per night.   On a Sunday I will write down what I want to do for myself during the week (health wise). This could be a boxing class, a dance class, a gentle walk along the beach, a bike ride, a weekend hike, a stretch class, weights session, an obstacle race etc as long as there is some movement every day and an activity that makes me happy, I know this makes me feel alive and proud of myself. Progress is happiness, we must constantly endeavour if we are to succeed.

Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?

Yes, I recently did this in Thailand. I dedicated time for me to undertake a detox program followed by some Muay Thai training which I absolutely loved. I met new and old friends from all over the world who were committed to putting themselves first and taking care of their mind and body.  It’s a wonderful experience and inspirational to dedicate time for you and be surrounded by likeminded individuals who also value health and wellbeing.  There is no better feeling than getting stronger every day and knowing you are more capable than yesterday.

Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, tell us about yours?

Self-care to me is loving yourself each and every single day. As a woman, I feel like we all need to work at this daily as we can feel very different about ourselves over time.  It’s important we take compliments from others rather than dismiss them and think about self-care not just externally but also internally. Recently on a health trip to Thailand, I was reminded of the importance of being still to relax the mind and trying nidra yoga to reduce stress, rather than always focussing on high cardio/intense exercise. Phone free time, booking a holiday overseas, lighting a candle and having a bubble bath, going for a facial and brunch with a friend, cooking a slow cooked meal, having a Thai massage, walking with my favourite music play list, undertaking a HITT class, reading a book with a cup of tea/coffee, listening to a podcast, discovering new music, watching a documentary, going to a comedy show, having a sauna/swim and writing down goals and plans are all parts of self-care that put a smile on my face.
