Hi Kirsten! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.
Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?
Well there is no same day for me everyday looks different with many different activities happening and changing. But generally I wake up at 5 am and will get my own yoga and meditation practise in first thing so that I am in the right frame of mind and body for my clients. My morning usually then consists of either working with private yoga clients / working with different brands or companies running their health and wellness programs. I then get home to have a bite to eat, I love being able to get home to make a nourishing meal and I have a little break to recharge and a walk outside. Then my afternoon I generally catch up on emails and my online clients and a bit of admin. I then head out to teach my evening classes. After that I’ll either meet friends for dinner to head home for a dinner and an evening mediation before a hot shower and some essential oils to relax and get in bed for an early night.
Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you do to overcome it?
Yes. A few years ago I got a bad parasite and bacterial infection and it took over my body and eventually I got so ill I couldn’t get out of bed. In order to heal I had to take 2 years off and focus solely on finding the cause of my illness and then begin healing. I made some major changes to my diet and exercise program and most importantly I found yoga and meditation which were key to my healing.
What does being healthy mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?
Healthy to me is physical, mental and social well-being. It’s a state of being where I can be my best and happiest self.
When life gets busy remind myself that I am only my best for myself and others when I am happy and healthy and therefore must prioritise my own health and wellness.
Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?
Yes. I went to Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat a few years ago, it was an amazing experience. It was a true reset and break from the ‘real world’ It was so blissful to be in nature, no distractions and have everything taken care for you and be able to go with the flow. I loved every minute and now make sure to take a few well-being holidays or breaks just for myself regularly.
Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, tell us about yours.
Self-care to me means making time for myself to do the things that make my soul shine. For me that’s lots of yoga, mediation, time at the beach in the ocean, time with friends, fun, bubble baths and nourishing myself with natural products like essential oils and my current fave RosehipPLUS organic skincare and just making time to take care of myself.
It’s really about listening to my body and myself. And, though it’s not always easy, taking time to make sure I’m looking after myself. I figure I’m no use to anyone when I’m completely run down and I’ve seen how this can affect ong-term health so am always mindful to pull myself up before I go too far down this path.
