Hi Teah! Thank you for being part of the Health and Fitness Travel, Strong, Healthy Women Interview Series, where we are shining a light on the importance of self-care, not as an indulgence but a necessity to reduce stress and general health issues.

Is there such a thing as a typical day for you and what does that look like?

To be honest, not really! Most days, I like to give myself some time to wake up, make breakfast and then get stuck into some work. The upside to working from home is that you can set your own schedule and each day can be completely different. The downside to working from home is that you can set you own schedule… which means it can be easy to get distracted when you are working.

In saying that, I like to go with the flow of whatever the day brings. The variety of my work is something that really inspires me!

Can you share a time when you felt your well-being was challenged in the past and what did you do to overcome it?

Probably the most challenging time for my well-being was when I was studying to become a Naturopath. My study friends and I used to joke that studying to be a Naturopath was the most un-Naturopathic thing we had ever done! And for me it was 100% true. By the end of my 4 years of study I was completely burnt out and had nothing left in my tank. Once I had finished, I pushed myself to keep going and get my business up and running straight away… because I didn’t want to lose momentum. But the truth is I had no momentum, and I have no idea how I managed to do it!

I decided I needed to take a break, slow down and rest. So I did… I slept, a lot. I watched Netflix and did a whole lotta nothing, and it was exactly what I needed! I began to feel better, more like myself again. Sometimes the best thing that we can do is nothing!

What does being healthy mean to you and how do you keep this at the forefront when life gets unavoidably busy?

Being healthy to me is all about balance… not diets, or restriction or always ‘eating clean’. Enjoying life and doing things that make us feel good are just as much a part of being healthy as eating the right foods and exercising. I think the 80/20 rule is a good place to start, 80% healthy habits and 20% habits that nourish you and feed your soul (like dark chocolate and yummy burgers). One thing that I find helpful with sticking to this when it gets busy is meal prep! I find that planning ahead and being prepared (especially when you know you are going to be busy) is key! When I start feeling like I have too much going on, I also make a point of saying no to things that I can say no to and making sure I’m not over-committing myself!

Have you ever taken a holiday specifically for your well-being? Can you share what the experience was like?

I think the majority of the holiday’s I’ve taken have been about looking after my well-being, although I wouldn’t say I’ve always booked a holiday with that solely in mind! The most recent holiday I took was only 30 minutes from where I live. Far enough away that it felt like an escape without having to travel for hours. My partner and I stayed in an amazing tent (which was more like a hotel room) out in the hinterland on a farm. It was quiet and relaxing, we ate pizza and drunk wine and spent time together. We only spent one night there but it was enough to rejuvenate my soul. I think it’s about time for my next holiday!

Every woman’s idea of self-care is different, tell us about yours?

I like to keep self care simple and go with the flow with whatever I feel like I need! Sometimes it’s a nice hot bath, some relaxing music, bath oil and face masks and sometimes it’s getting outside and spending the day in the garden. Getting creative is the best kind of self care for me, I love to disconnect for the day and let all my creative juices flow!
